Scope note
Fragrant myrrhlike oleoresin obtained from the small evergreen tree, Commiphora opobalsamum, native to the Middle East. Used in perfumes and medicines. Referred to in biblical Genesis as a healing balm; valued in medicine and perfume in ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. The term "balm of Gilead" has been incorrectly used to refer to "Canada balsam," which is derived from a North American tree.
